High 5, with Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman

Winners of ‘Best Duo’ at the 2013 and 2016 BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman visit Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre next month as part of 12-week UK in support of their new eight-track EP, Saved For A Rainy Day.

AAA caught up with the hugely talented husband and wife duo for a quick chat of their visit to the Capital. You can see the gig details below, and check out a few of their songs.

After a break to have their twin girls, the former Equation band members returned in fine form with two acclaimed albums – Hidden People (2012) followed by Tomorrow Will Follow Today (2015).

Personae, their fifth studio album, is an eclectic emotional see-saw of material, melding ten tracks of traditional ballads and their own versatile material, not surprisingly produced by Sean.

Personae was released on the Iscream label on March 9 and distributed by Proper Records.

AAA caught up with the dynamic duo for a quick chat ahead of their visit to Edinburgh.

Favourite Film

Pan’s Labyrinth is definitely up there.

The mythical story telling is done in such a masterful and powerful way.

The juxtaposition between the young girl’s fantasy world and her horrific real life is very clever.

We look forward to seeing the Director Guillermo Del Toro’s new Oscar winning The Shape of Water, which looks like it is also visually stunning.

Favourite Single

We are both still strangely attached to the first singles we both bought as kids.

Kathryn: Karma Chameleon by Culture Club – I still remember the watershed moment of seeing Boy George on Top of the Pops and not knowing if it was he or she.

Sean: One Vision by Queen – Such a titanic rock sound was electrifying for a young budding guitarist. Fingers were shred for many hours after purchase of this single from Plymouth’s Woolworths. ’Fried Chicken!!’

Favourite Album

The album we can agree on is Feats Don’t Fail Me Now by Little Feat.

We played this to death on our many US tours with our old band Equation.

It’s great road music by one of the great American groove bands.

We are soooo in love with the sound of Lowell George’s voice. It still is the first album to get played at a party at our house.

Favourite Gig

We have seen many great gigs but one that stands out for us both was seeing the great Randy Newman in a tiny hotel room in Boulder Colorado asking the dozen of us in the audience for requests.

Favourite Book

Kathryn: I first read The Lord of the Rings aged 8 years old and I return to it frequently.

Sean: I can spend hours with a big old Atlas. I have always loved maps.
