Russian authorities ban Pussy Riot member from travelling to Edinburgh

A member of punk band Pussy Riot has been banned from travelling to the Edinburgh Fringe by Russian authorities.

Maria Alyokhina was scheduled to promote her latest book.

Posting on Twitter yesterday from Moscow’s Domodevo Airport, she wrote: “the guys from the FSB border service told me that I am barred from leaving the country.”

According to the Moscow Times, Alyokhina was blocked from leaving Russia allegedly for evading community service she was ordered to perform after staging several public protests.

Alyokhina, an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin, was ordered to do 140 hours of community service for protests against the Russian security services.

Alyokhina was due to read from her book Riot Days from the 10-19 August in the Capital.

The Fringe’s official site describes the show as combining “punk, electronica, theatre, documentary footage and protest”.
