It has been a fixture on Rose Street’s west end for a decade, but, unlike many of the pubs in the vicinity, it’s a good reason to visit the old thoroughfare if you haven’t been there for a while.
It’s a fine example of what you can do with a small place in the centre of Edinburgh – a few tables inside, and a few outside if the weather is good enough, with a tiny servery for the wait staff facing an open side on a small but lively kitchen that dishes up some of the best steaks in town.
The name might call to mind heavily spiced Asian fusion dishes, but this is more hearty fare that mainly hails from farms in the Borders and fisheries from Fife, Angus and beyond.
The emphasis is on simple Scottish dishes and ingredients done to perfection, whether it’s Cullen skink, haggis with a Drambuie and honey and mustard sauce, the restaurant’s own fisherman’s pie, or the many variations on the ever-changing (and very good value for money) lunch menu.
There are choices for the somewhat more adventurous too – the hot Arbroath smokie, Auld Reekie cheese and Orkney ale rarebit with homemade chilli jam is a starter bursting with flavour.
With its inviting interior and a fine selection of Scottish ales, beers, cider and single malt whisky, Wildfire is one of our favourites in the town centre.
