Edinburgh author JK Rowling’s script of the stage play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child will be published as a book just after midnight on July 31, it was announced today.
Timed to coincide with the boy wizard’s birthday, Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Parts I and II will be published by Little, Brown in the UK and Scholastic in the US.
As well being as Harry’s birthday, July 31 also happens to be the day after the much-anticipated stage play opens in London.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child is being dubbed as the “eighth story” in the much-loved series.
It’s set 19 years after her seventh, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, in which Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione save Hogwarts and the wizarding world from the dark magic of Lord Voldemort.
A description of the new volume reads: “It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.
Publisher Little, Brown released JK Rowling’s first adult book, The Casual Vacancy, as well as three crime novels written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith – The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silkworm and Career of Evil.
“JK Rowling and her team have received a huge number of appeals from fans who can’t be in London to see the play and who would like to read the play in book format,” said David Shelley, CEO of Little, Brown.
Literary agency The Blair Partnership, which represents Rowling, said the decision to publish the script of the play was taken following “massive public demand”.
The play and book won’t be the only Potter-related release in 2016. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, a movie based on one of Rowling’s Harry Potter companion books, hits cinemas later this year.
