Joe and Jake to represent UK at Eurovision

Joe and Jake will represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held on 14 May at the Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

The duo, who first met on The Voice UK, were named winners of tonight’s (Feb 26) Eurovision: You Decide public vote on BBC Four.

T’he double act will perform their song, You’re Not Alone, at this year’s event.

After being named as winners, Joe (Woolford) said: “It feels amazing… to everyone that voted, thank you.”

Jake (Shakeshaft) added: “It’s going to be incredible – we hope we do you proud.”

During their stints on The Voice UK, Joe made it through to the live shows on Team Rita Ora, while Jake made it as far as the knockouts on Team Will.i.am.

Joe and Jake faced off against five other UK hopefuls during Eurovision: You Decide, including former girl band singer Bianca Claxton, whose song was co-written by Leona Lewis, and country duo Darline, who had been the bookies’ favourites.

The duo will be hoping to avoid the fate of last year’s entrants, Electro Velvet, who came third from last, scoring just five points.

The UK last won Eurovision in 1997, when Katrina and the Waves topped the leaderboard with the ballad Love Shine A Light.

It was the first time since 2010 that the public had been given a say in the UK’s entry.

“It means the world to us that everyone picked up the phone and voted for us,” added Jake. “It makes a huge difference going into the competition knowing we’re the public’s choice.”
