Alex Cornish’s AAA Edinburgh

Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Alex Cornish has produced four critically acclaimed albums, toured with Alison Moyet, Amy Macdonald and Starsailor, enjoyed plenty of airplay on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music, and his songs have been featured in numerous films and TV shows.

Most memorable capital event?

Wandering around during the Edinburgh Festival, watching the street performers, the comedians, actors, musicians and magicians all flyering for their shows, seeing the city coming alive, even without going to a show… every year that’s an inspiring experience in itself.

Who would you choose to headline Edinburgh’s Hogmanay?

At the moment I can’t stop listening to Glen Campbell (love is like a warm and tender rain, splashin on the roof, beatin on the window pane…), but I don’t think that would be the right Hogmanay vibe, so I will go and resurrect Jimi Hendrix – burning Strat and a wall of feedback in front of Edinburgh Castle… yes.

Favourite old fashion boozer?

The Baillie in Stockbridge.

Favourite style bar?

At the risk of sounding like a miserable @***, I tend to avoid fancy bars…

Favourite restaurant?

Bell’s Diner.

Do you love or loathe the Festival?

I love it.  See previous answer…

What restaurant would you recommend?

Bell’s Diner!  Burger!

Favourite art gallery?

The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Favourite cinema?

The Filmhouse!  Though I also like the Cameo and bar.

Favourite live music venue?

This is difficult because Edinburgh is short on good smaller music venues.  The Caves is very lovely, as is the Voodoo Rooms, but everyone should get involved in helping get the Leith Theatre back off the ground… looking for funding and much needed, an incredible potential space for music.

Favourite walk in or around the city?

Walking round the Botanic Gardens.

Favourite shopping area?

Red Dog Music, Rae Morris Music, Scayles Music, VoxBox, Vinyl Villains, Elvis Shakespeare.  Got the gist?

Favourite piece of architecture?

All of the old bits in the centre of town.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the city?

I haven’t seen much change of late, compared to when I go to other cities, which are changing massively each time I go back.  That’s a good thing.

Favourite festival?

Belladrum!

Favourite local hero?

Heroes – My Mum and Dad.
