Biffy Clyro to road-test new material in Edinburgh

Biffy Clyro are likely to use to their headline slot at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations to showcase brand new material, AAA can reveal.

The three-piece said earlier this year they’d “almost call 2015 a year off”, but they’ve been working in the studio on the follow-up to 2013’s double LP Opposites.

At the start of the year, frontman Simon Neil revealed the band have 20 songs – all “80% written” – for their next album. But their newbie is unlikely to be as long as its predecessor.

“It’s sounding really rocking at the moment,” he said. “I think it’s important to put some more rules and limitations on what we do because on the last few records we ran with whatever ideas we had. So on this one, when I say stripped back it’s not going to sound skeletal or anything but perhaps a bit more aggressive.

“Coming off the back of a double album, it’s important to be really concise so we might only have ten songs.”

The band will return from their hiatus when they play Concert in the Gardens, joined at the event by locals Idlewild and Honeyblood in an all-Scottish affair.

The cult rockers headlined the event back in 2010,  having gone from rock’s amiable underdogs to one of the biggest acts in Europe around that time.

In a statement about their headline slot at Concert in the Gardens, Biffy Clyro said, “We are so happy to come out of musical hibernation to kick off 2016 with the show on Hogmanay.

“We want to rock off the cobwebs and prepare for the year of da biff!!  Nothing can compete with Edinburgh’s celebrations and we hope to make it a special night for everyone!”
