Chrissie Hynde’s The Pretenders announce first Edinburgh gig in over 20 years

The Pretenders have announced two Scottish gigs for 2017 – including their first visit to Edinburgh in more than 20 years.

The Chrissie Hynde-fronted outfit, currently on tour in the US with Stevie Nicks, will play Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on October 1 before visiting Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on October 3.

Tickets for both gigs go on sale this Friday (December 9) at 10am.

The Pretenders returned earlier this year with Alone, their first album in eight years.

Alone was recorded in Nashville with Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys, who stood as captain, producer and multi-instrumentalist on the album, which sees 65-year-old Hynde at her searingly honest, most incisive best.

After the untimely deaths of original members guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon early on, and the more recent departure of drummer Martin Chambers, Alone features Hynde as the lone original member.

Hynde has, in fact, been using session players on albums released under the Pretenders banner since 1990’s Packed.

As she explained to Billboard, though, Alone is a Pretenders album.

“What happened with this one was, when I brought these songs back from the studio, my manager was playing them for someone, and the guy said, ‘Wow, it’s great to hear the Pretenders back,” Hynde said. “And so my manager came to me and said, ‘It really does sound like a Pretenders album.’ And I went, ‘Yeah, doesn’t it?’”

Auerbach got on board after Hynde sent what she called a “really long, rambling email” explaining the difference, in her mind, between Alone and her 2014 solo project, Stockholm.

“I went into it saying, ‘This solo-vs.-the-Pretenders thing has sort of plagued me for years,’” said Hynde. “This idea of having to justify using the name the Pretenders. But I guess the real reason behind that is A) most of the original Pretenders are dead, so what can I do about it? And B) I want to carry on playing our songs and stuff. So that’s how that happened 35 years ago. And since then, there’s been some lineup changes.”

The Pretenders best-known hits include Don’t Get Me Wrong, Brass In Pocket and Hymn To Her.
