Edinburgh Fringe: Ever Mainard interview

As seen on Showtime’s Knock, Knock, It’s Tig, and featured in Roxanne Gay’s Bad Feminist, Ever Mainard has brought her debut show to Edinburgh. Tackling gender identity, modern feminism, bad luck and outlandish stories from her Texan upbringing it is something completely new from across the pond. AAA caught up with Ever for a chat.

How has your Fringe been so far?

What a blast. I landed the day before my preview shows and just walked around the city. So many bars!!! I mean… Err… So much culture!

Tell us about the show you’re in…

Let Me Be Your Main man is really a show about my Texas upbringing, life in Chicago, an ending of an engagement in LA and finding spirituality. LA is really keen into letting rocks heal pain… Having a bad day? Wear a rock! Got a sinus headache? Wear a rock. You know the whole crystal thing. Did you know there is a crystal used to call alien life forms? There is. I read about it in the crystal bible.

What’s the audience reaction been like?

Well – I’m about to find out! It’s the eve of my first show! I’m excited to see how it works and how to build it – make it better. Like a puzzle, you know?

When did you realise you were funny?

I’ve always known I wanted to be a comedian. It was usually my wit and cleverness that got me out of a lot of trouble spots as a weird girl growing up in rural Texas.

Were you the class clown?

Yes! Always!

Can comedians get away with saying things no one else can?

Oh absolutely. We’re mirrors to the audience. We have a gift to reflect the society around us and make people think and reflect upon their own thoughts and actions.

Was there a comedian who inspired you?

I grew up without cable – so I watched a lot of Saturday night live and always watched stand-up when I could! Paula Poundstone, Ellen, Wanda Sykes, Maria Bamford, Chris Rock.

Are there any other shows on this year’s Fringe  you’d recommend?

Oh gosh! Sam Simmons, Katia Kvinge, Felicity Ward, Georgie Donnelly.

What’s on your hit-list to see?

Probably the same as above. I’ve seen Sam Simmons a bunch of times in LA and always pee myself with laughter. That and Puddles Pity Party!

What do you like to do in Edinburgh on your day off?

I’m going to steal a dog.

Can you recommend a bar or restaurant in Edinburgh?

Well the KFC stayed open late so I could charge my phone when I was lost. Shout out to those teens who wanted to go home but sold me some stale ass fries and let me get my barring!

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen this year?

So far pretty tame – but I bet in two days time I will see things I’ll never be able to forget.

Sell your show in no more than ten words…

Good time gal wants to show you a good time.
