Fringe: Jon Cozart interview

YouTube sensation Jon Cozart reached the impressive milestone of three million subscribers to his channel whilst wowing audiences at his Fringe show, Laughter Ever After, which has proved a hit with festival goers since opening in Edinburgh this month.
AAA caught up with Jon earlier this week for a chat.

  • How has your Fringe been so far?

It’s been an amazing few weeks. I’ve met tons of new people and I’m really soaking up the city and the shows.

  • Tell us a bit about the show you’re in?
I’m doing a one man show where I perform my YouTube songs, most of which are acapella music parodies live, along with a few new songs. Ive got four big TV screens backing me up, and I whip out my ukulele and piano for a few numbers. It’s the first time I’ve done anything like this.
  • What’s the audience reaction been so far?

Audiences have been really positive here. Everyone is out to have a good time and they like to let me know it.

  • You hit three million subscribers to your YouTube channel while in Edinburgh – did you do anything to celebrate.

You can’t reach a milestone and not have a few drinks! My producer also bought me a nice big cookie cake to celebrate.

  • You get requests all the time from fans wanting certain videos from you – what’s the strangest request you’ve had?

A few people have asked me to do some manga parodies which is kinda weird to me.

  • Do you write the lyrics to all the songs you perform?

Yeah, I do everything by myself. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so it works for me.

  • There’s thousands of shows on – why should Fringe-goers fork out to see yours?

I can safely say there’s nothing quite like this show at the Fringe. Whether it’s the TV screens or the YouTube celebrity aspect or the bizarre parodies, I think I have a really special show on my hands.

  • Are there any other shows on this year you’d recommend?

Of course! There’s a killer production of Urinetown which I really enjoyed, plus my friends at Shitfaced Showtime work hard for the laughs every night.

  • What’s on your hit list to see?

I’m looking at getting more circus under my belt. The Elephant in the Room looks great.

  • What do you like to do in Edinburgh on your day off?

I hiked Arthur’s Seat with my brother and a friend. It was an amazing time.

  • Can you recommend a bar or restaurant in Edinburgh?

I love The Newsroom. They have a great BBQ burger that can’t be beat.

  • What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen this year?

Probably the circus show called Dolls. It was incredible, and very very cryptic. My jaw was on the floor throughout it.
