High 5, with Ally McErlaine (Red Sky July)

Back on the road to promote a brand new mini album, country rockers Red Sky July visit The Caves on Wednesday, 21 September.
The band is comprised of husband and wife duo Ally McErlaine (also guitarist in Texas) and Shelly Poole (formerly one half of 90s pop duo Alisha’s Attic), along with former model Charity Hair, who was also in Alice Band.
Titled Voyager, the new mini album features a small collection of new songs, and acts as the sister release to the band’s recent full-length album The Truth And The Lie.
AAA caught up with Ally for a chat ahead of their visit to Edinburgh…
Favourite Film
Boyhood. A very original film directed by Richard Linklater – took 12 years to film with the same actors, so you literally see them grow older as the film goes on. I still think of it often and I love the music, especially the song Hero by Family of the Year.
Favourite Single
Dancing Queen by ABBA. Probably the most perfect pop single ever made – really takes me back to being a school kid. The world would be much poorer without this song.
Favourite Album
Black Star by David Bowie. Hard to pick one favourite album obviously but this sprang to mind. At the end of a career of amazing music he left us with this disturbing and brilliant record to bring it all to a full stop. Possibly rock music’s last GREAT album.
Favourite Gig
Prince at the 02. Out of everyone I ever saw, Prince was way above them all – pure talent and energy. Must have seen him ten times, including some smaller secret shows – but if I need to say one, then it was when he played his long run at the Millennium Dome.
Favourite Book
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. A dark poetic novel about scalp hunters in early America. We were inspired to write the song Renegade by this book.
