Lego Movie sequel delayed until 2019

Movie-goers will to have to wait a bit longer to see The Lego Movie 2 after Warner Bros delayed the release of the sequel by over nine months.

The animated follow-up to The Lego Movie had been due to open in cinemas on May 8, 2018, but it will now arrive in theatre on February 8th, 2019.

Rob Schrab, best known for directing episodes of US sitcoms Community and The Mindy Project, has taken over the director’s chair from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo who co-directed The Lego Movie.

Lord and Miller are signed on as producers for the sequel and are also co-writing the script.

Meanwhile, Robot Chicken’s Chris McKay has been hired to direct The Lego Batman Movie with Will Arnett reprising his voice role from The Lego Movie.

Released in 2014, The Lego Movie was a surprise hit for Warner Bros, raking in over £301 million at the box office worldwide.

Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara performed their hit song from the film, Everything Is Awesome!!!, at the Academy Awards in February 2015. Listen below.

The Lego Movie Sequel will follow The Lego Batman Movie, which hits cinemas on February 10, 2017, and Ninjago, a Ninja-themed spin-off which is set for release on September 22, 2017.
