Steven Avery’s attorney’s, Dean Strang and Jerry Butin, are bringing their acclaimed live show about Making a Murderer to Edinburgh’s Usher Hall next year.
The duo, who were tasked with defending Steven Avery in the controversial murder case that was explored in the 10-part Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer, will discuss the case, recent developments and take part in a live question and answer session with the audience in Edinburgh on Friday 27 January. The pair will also chair a wider discussion about he criminal justice system in the US.
Making a Murderer premiered on Netflix in January 2016 and quickly gained a cult following. The hit series followed Strang and Butin as they set out to prove Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey had been wrongly convicted of murdering photographer Teresa Halbach in March 2007. Previously, Avery spent 18 years behind bars for a rape he did not commit. Whilst Daasey’s conviction has since been overturned, Avery is currently serving a life sentence at Waupan Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin.
After the popular series aired, more than 500,000 people signed a petition calling for President Barack Obama to pardon Avery. This prompted The White House to issue a response stating that “Since Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are both state prisoners, the President cannot pardon them. A pardon in this case would need to be issued at state level by the appropriate authorities.”
The lawyers have successful toured A Conversation on Making a Murderer with Dean Strang and Jerry Butin around Norther America and are now bringing the show to the UK. They have confirmed that a ‘significant portion’ of their proceeds from the tour will be donated to local and national equal justice charities.
