New Star Wars film takes $290.5 million in first weekend

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story raked in $290.5 million (around £235 million) at the Global Box Office this weekend.

The Star Wars spin-off film premiered on Saturday night (December 10) in Los Angeles, before it hits cinemas worldwide on Thursday (December 15).

The figure makes it the second-highest grossing December-opener – behind last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which took $395 million.

Rogue One, which stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Donnie Yen and Mads Mikkelsen, tells the story of a group of rebel fighters on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

The film is the first in a series of on-screen adventures exploring stories outside the core Star Wars saga.

It is set before the first part of the original series, Episode IV: A New Hope.
