Preview: Chicago, Edinburgh Playhouse

Tonight’s going to be about All That Jazz as hit musical Chicago prepares to open at the Edinburgh Playhouse as part of a new UK-wide tour.

The hit show, which currently holds the record for the longest running musical revival on Broadway, will open at the Edinburgh Playhouse tonight and run until Saturday, June 18.

The crime musical is set in Chicago in the roaring 1920s and follows the story of Roxie Hart, a sassy nightclub singer that murders her lover, Fred Casely. Once jailed for her crime, Roxie meets fellow performer and murderess Velma Kelly and the two seek to gain acquittal with the hope of using their notoriety to further their careers.

With music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago features a plethora of classic songs including All That Jazz, Funny Honey, Razzle Dazzle and Me and My Baby.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere and Queen Latifa all starred in the film adaptation of Chicago in 2002, which won six Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Emmerdale and Coronation Street actress Hayley Tamaddon will follow in the footsteps of Liza Minnelli, Michelle Williams and Kelly Osbourne through portraying Hart for the duration of the UK tour. She will be joined by X Factor winner Sam Bailey as Mama Morton and EastEnders star John Partridge as smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn.

In addition to appearing on television shows such Shameless, Dancing on Ice and Waterloo Road, Tamaddon has also appeared as Frenchie in Grease, Diana Morales in A Chorus Line and Janet in The Rocky Horror Show.

The popular musical last toured the UK in 2012, during which it enjoyed a sell-out run at The King’s Theatre and starred Pop Idol winner Will Young.

Chicago, The Edinburgh Playhouse, Greenside Place, Edinburgh, June 13 – 18, 7.30pm (matinee performances on selected dates), 0844-871 3014.
