When a band that’s been loitering on the brink of mainstream superstardom for years starts to headline venues like Wembley Arena and The Hydro, it’s difficult not to question whether they’ll still be able to captivate an audience in a venue as small as the Edinburgh Corn Exchange.
But All Time Low have never been a band to shy away from a challenge and their stubborn refusal to mess with the brazen formula that made them so successful in the first place is admirable, resulting in an unashamedly youthful pop-punk show that was at times predictable, but always overwhelmingly fun.
The energetic four-piece from Baltimore kicked off proceedings with Satellite, taken from their latest album Future Hearts, before launching headfirst into a long and varied set that highlighted just how far they’ve come since they made their debut more than a decade ago. The emotive Tidal Waves and anthemic Kids in the Dark stood out among new material, eliciting just as positive a reaction as fan-favourites Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t) and Something’s Gotta Give.
“I like festivals but this is fucking wild. This, right here, is what it’s all about,” yelled frontman Alex Gaskarth, mid-way through their set. Watching the smiley, sweaty faces in the audience sing every lyric back to him during closing number Dear Maria, Count Me In, it was almost impossible to disagree.
Whilst it would still be premature to proclaim the quartet have stolen the pop-punk crown from the invincible veteran acts we all know and love (Blink-182 and Green Day, to name a few), their triumphant show at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange and imminent slots at the Reading and Leeds festivals suggests that such a prospect is far from being completely out of the question in the future.
