The eagerly-anticipated Star Wars spin-off film won’t just focus on the origin story of Han Solo – it will also be about his furry best friend, Chewbacca.
The next Star Wars franchise release will be anthology movie Rogue One, which is expected to hit cinemas this December.
That will then be followed by another instalment of the main saga, Episode VIII, in 2017.
Now Disney chairman/CEO Bob Iger has confirmed new details of the future spin-off. He broke the news at the Deutsche Bank 2016 Media, Internet & Telecom Conference on Tuesday (March 8), as reported by The Wrap.
“Rogue One is about a band of rebels plotting to steal the plans to the Death Star,” Iger said. “It takes place right before George Lucas’ first film, which came out in 1977 and is now called The New Hope.”
He added: “We have others in the works, including one, which is an origin story about Han Solo and Chewy. And that’ll come after Star Wars VIII in 2018. And then there will possibly more thereafter.”
The Han Solo origin film will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (Lego Movie). No casting decisions have been made public yet.
Meanwhile, the release date has been confirmed for the Star Wars: The Force Awakens DVD. It will come on April 5 in the US and April 18 in the UK.
The DVD and Blu-Ray release will be stacked with extras including an in-depth documentary shot behind the scenes of J.J. Abrams’ film, as well as deleted scenes and interviews with the cast and crew.
The bonus features include:
