UK rock veterans and twin-guitar pioneers Wishbone Ash perform at The Jam House in Edinburgh on Friday night – and AAA has two pairs of tickets to give away.
Formed in 1969, The Ash released their self-titled debut LP a year later, and have gone on to release a further 24 studio albums, with their most recent offering being Blue Horizon, which dropped last year.
Still led by Andy Powell – the only original member still with the band, and the one constant through numerous personnel changes over the years – Friday’s gig will feature the line-up of Powell, Bob Skeat, Muddy Manninen and Joe Crabtree, who will perform new material alongside old classics such as Blowin’ Free, Jail Bait, The Pilgrim and Phoenix.
Rock behemoths Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Opeth have all credited Wishbone Ash as major influence on them thanks to their signature twin-guitar mastery – and in 1989, Powell was voted one of the most important guitarists in rock history.
Speaking ahead of Friday’s gig, Powell says, “We are looking forward to reconnecting with fans from the past who are just catching on that we’ve been touring non-stop for 46 years, to see and hear how we’ve grown while carrying the torch.
“And for our faithful fans who have walked with us consistently through the years, we have some special things in store to reach new heights in our relationship.”
Powell has just released his autobiography, Eyes Wide Open: True Tales of a Wishbone Ash Warrior, through Jawbone Press.
A must-read for fans, the book has a foreword by Edinburgh author Ian Rankin, who introduced the band on stage when they played The Caves in 2011 (see video below).
“It’s basically just road tales, and what it’s like to live a life in rock music,” says Powell.
“I kept journals from time to time, and I have so much memorabilia. I just thought it was time to put my thoughts down.”
