Woody Harrelson confirmed for Han Solo film

Hollywood star Woody Harrelson has joined the cast for the forthcoming Star Wars spin-off film about a young Han Solo.

After months of rumours, the Natural Born Killers and True Detective actor has now been confirmed to play the role of Han Solo’s mentor in the origin film.

“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” said the film’s directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in a statement.

“His ability to find both humour and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.”

Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) will play the young Han Solo, while Emilia Clarke has an unspecified role.

Donald Glover – also known as rapper Childish Gambino – has been cast as the film’s young Lando Calrissian.

The film doesn’t yet have a title but will focus on the early days of Han Solo’s adventures with Chewbacca and Lando, several years before he encountered Luke Skywalker and joined the galactic Rebellion.

It’s due in cinemas in 2018, though an exact date has yet to be set.

The Han Solo origin film will be directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord (Lego Movie).
